Human Development and Learning

The teacher understands how individuals grow, develop and learn and provides learning opportunities that support the intellectual, social, and personal development of all students.

To meet this standard, I chose the Developmental Needs Portfolio assignment I completed for my Educational Psychology 430 class. For this assignment, I was required to create five different activities that would help me assess my future students' developmental needs. I was able to demonstrate my understanding of adolescent development as well as my ability to create lessons and activities that cater to my students' needs as people with developing identities, and intellectual, social, and emotional abilities. Because I received an "A" on the assignment, I feel that this artifact shows the time and thought I put in to all aspects of my students' needs as people when planning activities for my classroom. It also shows that I take multiple aspects of my students' development into account rather than only focusing on one.

In the activities I describe, I address my students' emotional and social needs, as well as their need to be challenged by and engaged in the activities in which they are involved in my classroom. I also incorporated a discussion of issues of diversity in order to raise social awareness in my students regarding the world around them. I think this assignment shows my ability to utilize students' development to help them learn something about themselves as well as those around them, which is one of the most important parts of a teacher's job description.
