Learning Environment

The teacher uses an understanding of individual and group motivation and behavior to create a learning environment that encourages positive social interaction, active engagement in learning, and self-motivation.

To show that I have met this standard, I chose to include part of the Unit Plan assignment I completed for my Curriculum and Instruction class this semester. In this section of my unit plan, I identified the demographic of my classroom, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of this particular group of students. I also included the rationale I wrote to describe why I decided to create this lesson plan for this group of students. In it, I discuss the dynamic that exists in my classroom, as well as why I feel my Freak the Mighty unit plan will benefit these particular students. In my rationale, I talk about the way I would like my students to interact socially and how I will use the book to encourage them to build on their social skills. I also discuss how the novel will help me get my students engaged in their education, as well as the book itself. I discuss how I will use the students' own experiences in order to help them relate to the characters and events in the book and therefore give them a better chance of becoming interested in both the novel and the writing they will do about it. I talk about how I would like to use my students' desire for autonomy to help them become more self-motivated and self-directed while they are in my classroom, which will be a less risky place to take chances in this area. This lesson plan also helps encourage my students to be accepting of other people; a behavior that will help the classroom develop into a place where students can feel comfortable and free to experience their education, explore, make mistakes, and be themselves.
