Instructional Delivery

The teacher understands and uses a variety of instructional strategies to encourage students' development of critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills.

Rationale

To show that I have met this standard, I chose the same lesson plan artifact as the "Planning for Instruction" standard. For this lesson, I used a wide variety of instructional strategies including modeling, individual work, worksheets, group work, and presentations. My placement partner and I modeled a "how-to" presentation in order to give the students a concrete idea of what we were looking for in their own group presentations. The students were required to describe an activity, in very specific detail, which helped them use their critical thinking skills in order to make sure the covered every step in the process of performing their chosen activity. During their group work, students used their problem-solving skills to assign roles for each group member, create a presentation, as well as to make a flowchart that would clearly describe the process of their activity. Finally, the students implemented their performance skills when they gave their group presentation in which they described and acted out, in detail, how to accomplish their activity for the entire class.

Through modeling with my placement partner as well as our verbal instruction and variety of teaching strategies, our students accomplished the goals we set down for the lesson. The planning I did to include all of these different strategies shows my understanding of these tactics and my implementation of them shows that I can do so effectively in a real classroom of students.
