Content Knowledge

Rationale

For the Content Knowledge standard, I have chosen an analytical paper I wrote during this semester for my Literary Theory class. In the paper, I demonstrate a good grasp of theorist Roman Jakobson's definition of what literature is, as well as the ability to more broadly apply Jakobson's theory to a poem by W. H. Auden.

I chose this artifact because it demonstrates one of the areas in which I have improved in my English classes this term. This paper helped me to solidify my understanding of one of the literary theories with which I was so unfamiliar at the beginning of this year. I can now see how literary theory has impacted my own understanding of the literature I encounter in my English courses. I feel as though I am able to see literature from a different, more advanced view after being exposed to such a wide variety of theories and schools of thought.

The best way to achieve the goal of providing a theoretical foundation for students to build on and apply in a broader sense that I have experienced thus far is to have students explore the connections between a theoretical essay and a piece of literature that will help them best investigate the theory at hand. With the incorporation of theory, students are given the tools to analyze literature deeper, more thoroughly, and with a more academically focused eye which will lead the students to expand upon the commonly discussed devices like themes and metaphors, and really get at the "why?" or "so what?" part of literary analysis. Thus, this artifact exemplifies how my ideas of what an English class should incorporate have expanded beyond the typical subjects of literature and language arts. It also shows that I have a firmer background in the theories that future students would find useful in their examination.
