Literacy Techniques and Strategies

All teachers must know a broad range of literacy techniques and strategies for every aspect of communication and must be able to develop each student's ability to read, write, speak and listen to his or her potential within the demands of the discipline.

Rationale

To show that I have met this standard, I have included three artifacts: one lesson plan intended to teach my students how to read for and identify important plot points, one to teach my students how to pre-write before beginning their full essay drafts, and one to show them how to be effective and constructive editors. This shows that I have an understanding of how to teach my students the skills they need in order to become good readers and writers, which are two very important parts of communication. In these lesson plans, I use a variety of literacy techniques and tools including group work, computer technology, modeling, handouts, discussion, critical questioning, and conferencing. Because I use so many different methods to teach students how to read and write, I am able to cater to a wider variety of learning styles and educational needs, which is a very important part of teaching students as people rather than just teaching content. These activities also give students several opportunities to show that they have these valuable literacy skills in multiple mediums. By planning for all of these different needs and intending to utilize many techniques, I demonstrate my knowledge of a broad range of literacy practices and approaches, as well as how to effectively execute them.
